Platinum Vape MCT Oil Recall in Michigan: Find Out Which Products Here!

Platinum Vape MCT Oil Recall in Michigan: Find Out Which Products Here!

How a Major Cannabis Brand Ignited a Consumer Safety Crisis in Michigan

More MSO drama

Last week (January 31st 2025) the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) issued a voluntary recall on several Platinum Vape (PV) cartridges after testing revealed the presence of Medium-Chain Triglyceride (MCT) oil—a substance deemed unsafe for inhalation.

Extremely Unsafe

The recall, executed in collaboration with RWB Michigan LLC, Platinum Vape’s licensed operator in the state, raised serious concerns about product safety, regulatory enforcement, and consumer trust. While MCT oil is safe for ingestion, research indicates that inhaling aerosolized oils can pose serious respiratory risks.

The Recalled Platinum Vape Cartridges

The CRA’s recall applies to Platinum Vape distillate cartridges sold after March 4, 2024, containing MCT oil. 🥥⚠️

The affected flavors/strains include:

  • Garlic Cookie
  • Blazing Blue Cheese
  • Banana Candy
  • Grape Valley Kush

These are the varieties of PV’s Distillate Cartridges that have been recalled.

Consumers who purchased these strains are advised to return them to the dispensary or dispose of them safely.

What Is MCT Oil, and Why Is It Dangerous in Vapes?

MCT Oil: A Common Ingredient—But Not for Inhalation

MCT oil (Medium-Chain Triglyceride oil) is a fat-based compound derived from coconut or palm oil. It’s commonly used in:

✅ Food supplements (e.g., keto diets)
✅ CBD tinctures and edibles
✅ Skin & hair care products

However, while safe to eat, MCT oil becomes dangerous when vaporized. 🌬️

Health Risks of Inhaling MCT Oil

🔴 Lipid Pneumonia – When inhaled, oil-based substances like MCT can coat the lungs, leading to inflammation, fluid buildup, and impaired oxygen exchange.

🔴 Respiratory Toxicity – Studies suggest MCT oil aerosol can trigger inflammation and lung irritation, especially with long-term exposure.

🔴 Industry Lessons from the 2019 Vape Crisis – The EVALI outbreak (E-cigarette or Vaping Use-Associated Lung Injury) was linked to Vitamin E Acetate, another oil-based cutting agent.

This recall raises concerns that some companies still use oil-based diluents in vapes. These problems and more can be caused by contaminated vape carts.

Did Platinum Vape Break the Law? Regulatory Failures & CRA’s Response

Michigan’s 2024 Ban on MCT Oil in Vapes

In June 2024, the CRA banned the use of MCT oil in cannabis vape products effective October 1, 2024, citing health concerns and emerging research. However, despite the ban:

➡️ Some Platinum Vape products containing MCT oil remained in circulation.

➡️ PV’s compliance with the new regulation is now under scrutiny.

This raises a critical regulatory question:

Did Platinum Vape knowingly violate Michigan’s 2024 ban— or was this an honest mistake?

Only one team knows the answer with any certainty, for now.

Industry Fallout: Is This a One-Off, or a Bigger Problem?

How Dispensaries Are Reacting

🚨 Some Michigan dispensaries have already pulled Platinum Vape carts from their shelves.
🚨 Retailers are evaluating liability risks in selling recalled products.

Expect dispensaries to distance themselves from PV if lawsuits emerge or consumers report health issues.

Will There Be Lawsuits?

  • If consumers experience health effects, Platinum Vape or RWB Michigan LLC could face legal claims.
  • CRA may impose additional penalties if they determine PV knowingly ignored the MCT ban.

What This Means for the Future of Cannabis Vaping

💨 Stricter Testing Requirements – Expect more frequent and rigorous lab testing of cannabis vape products.

💨 Ingredient Transparency Demands – Consumers will demand clearer labeling on vape ingredients.

💨 MSOs & Compliance Issues – Multi-State Operators (MSOs) like Platinum Vape must adapt faster to local regulations to avoid reputational damage.

Regulatory Oversight and Consumer Impact

Beyond Curaleaf’s corporate failings, this case underscores a broader issue within the cannabis industry: regulatory oversight and consumer safety.

  • Duration of Non-Compliance: The MLive report highlights that tainted THC vapes were sold to Michigan consumers for nearly a year before detection, raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of existing regulatory monitoring.
  • Delayed Action: Despite industry regulations, the slow response suggests potential gaps in enforcement that allowed unsafe products to remain in circulation for months.
  • Consumer Health Implications: Extended exposure to low-quality or improperly regulated cannabis products could pose long-term health risks, reinforcing the need for more proactive oversight and faster recalls.

This raises critical questions about how well current cannabis safety protocols function and whether agencies like the CRA need to increase their surveillance and testing efforts to protect consumers.

Final Thoughts: A Wake-Up Call for the Cannabis Industry

The Platinum Vapes MCT oil recall is a reminder of the ongoing challenges in cannabis product safety. As Michigan tightens health regulations, companies must adapt or face consequences.

While PV has yet to issue a full public statement, the industry’s response will determine whether consumer trust can be restored.

Caveat emptor, caveat stoner

I’ve purchased dozens of PV’s myself over the years and thankfully it has been a year or longer so I don’t feel too worried but it sure makes you think. Cheap 12-for-100 deals can be a warning sign for problems like this. Buyer beware and buyer be aware! 💯

Check the full list of Locations and METRC tags in the recall.

Follow this advice from the MCRA:

“Consumers who purchased these four flavors of Platinum Vapes any time after March 4, 2024 should check the recall bulletin. Consumers with a recalled vape should return it to the sales location from where it was purchased or dispose of it safely.

Consumers who have experienced adverse reactions after using these products should report their symptoms and product use to their healthcare providers. Consumers are encouraged to also report any adverse reactions to marijuana product to the CRA via the Adverse Reaction Form or by phone at 517-284-8599. A licensee who becomes aware of any adverse reactions to a marijuana product must notify the CRA and enter the information into METRC within one business day.”
