BLOOM Vape Cartridge Recall in Michigan

Coming just months after the major Platinum Vapes recall, Michigan’s cannabis industry faces another significant product safety issue. Exhale Systems Inc (AU-P-0000495) of Detroit, in conjunction with the Cannabis Regulatory Agency, is conducting a voluntary recall of Bloom branded vapes offered for sale in the Michigan market.

So, Who is Bloom?

Exhale Systems Inc, a cannabis processor founded just last year in 2023, rapidly expanded to operate one of Michigan’s largest cannabis manufacturing facilities – a 24,000 square foot operation in Detroit. The company, despite its recent entry into the market, quickly secured partnerships with major brands and established wide-ranging manufacturing capabilities including solventless extraction, edibles production, and infused pre-roll operations.

Of particular interest given the current recall situation is their rapid scaling of operations. In less than a year, they moved from startup to handling production for BLOOM, a major multi-state brand, while simultaneously developing co-packing and white labeling operations for other cannabis brands.

The company’s swift expansion and the current recall raise questions about growth management and quality control in Michigan’s rapidly evolving cannabis manufacturing sector. Their facility, while described as “state of the art,” has now been linked to product safety concerns less than a year into operations.

Complete List & Analysis

Various flavors of BLOOM Classic and BLOOM Live brand vape cartridges contained Medium Chain Triglyceride Chain (MCT) oil and should not be consumed. This follows a similar pattern to the Platinum Vapes recall, where MCT oil was also the concern, suggesting an industry-wide need for stricter quality control measures around vape cartridge ingredients.

The scale of this recall is notable – affecting 564 unique products across 58 retail locations throughout Michigan, from Detroit to the Upper Peninsula

This geographic spread demonstrates the extensive distribution network of cannabis products in Michigan and highlights the importance of comprehensive tracking systems when recalls become necessary.

Some key differences from the Platinum Vapes recall:

  • BLOOM’s recall was initiated more quickly after discovery
  • The tracking information and location data is more comprehensive
  • The distribution pattern shows a wider geographic spread
  • The recall process appears more streamlined, possibly due to lessons learned

Various flavors of BLOOM Classic and BLOOM Live brand vape cartridges contained Medium Chain Triglyceride Chain (MCT) oil and should not be consumed.

Whispers of More Recalls

Two major vape recalls in Michigan within months of each other raises serious questions about quality control in the cannabis vape industry. While Michigan’s tracking system has proven effective at identifying and managing these recalls, the recurring presence of MCT oil in products suggests deeper issues with manufacturing oversight. The cannabis industry’s rapid growth has brought unprecedented access and variety to consumers, but with that comes the responsibility to ensure product safety.

These recalls serve as a reminder that despite cannabis becoming mainstream, it remains a developing industry that requires vigilant regulation and perhaps enhanced manufacturing standards. For consumers, it reinforces the importance of purchasing from licensed facilities and keeping track of product information.

Moving Forward

We’ll continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, we urge all consumers to check their products against this list and take appropriate action if affected.

Along with the recall notice on Bloom’s website there’s also a webpage listing all the affected products. Here at Glacier we don’t think you should have to visit 3+ websites to get all the info you need. We’ve got the story and the affected products all in one place.
